Description of Work

The primary focus of this internship is on garden maintenance but other regular activities include plant propagation and care for plants in our nursery and greenhouse. Occasional activities include seed collection and processing and invasive exotics removal. Summer interns work in our habitat gardens focusing on southeastern native plants and a variety of display gardens including carnivorous and aquatic plant collections, an herb garden and garden of flowering plant families. This is a great opportunity to become familiar with the flora of the southeastern U.S. and learn sustainable horticultural methods.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires North Carolina Pesticide License and North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.

Preferred:
Experience with plants and gardening and a strong environmental ethic are preferred though not required.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

The ability and desire to perform physical labor out of doors in summer conditions is necessary. Must be able to safely lift or move items weighing up to 40 lbs with or without reasonable accommodations.
