Safety Coordinator

Position Identification:

Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director of HR and Safety

Position Summary:

The Safety Coordinator ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local safety regulations governing the construction industry at the facility within the assigned area of responsibility. This position will advise, train and counsel field and office employees on safety procedures, accident reporting requirements and root cause analysis including but not limited to; all job hazard analysis, job site specific plans, roof inspections and audits while interacting with construction staff and building owners.

The Safety Coordinator will deliver safety-related training resources and technical expertise to field employees, supervisors and managers. The Safety Coordinator will also provide the Operating Unit President with timely information related to safety compliance activities. This position will report to the Director of Human Resources and Safety.

Job Functions:

  • Maintains the Behavioral Based Safety philosophy within the company
  • Selects program priorities to benefit each facet of the construction trade.(i.e. Roofing, Sheet metal, Service)
  • Communicates and presents occupational safety information (i.e. Fall Protection, Hazard Communication, Boom Trucks, New Employee Safety Orientation, PPE, Aerial Boom/Scissor Lift, Blood borne Path., Confined Space, Slips and Trips Falls, Ladders, Scaffold Awareness, Scaffold Competent Person, Housekeeping, Proper Lifting, and Forklift)
  • Develops training for new hires and on-going training for current employees
  • Creates and issues weekly tool box training sheets to the operating units
  • Performs audits at project locations and periodically assesses job hazards
  • Reviews pre job set-ups, job site inspections, along with all equipment, vehicle, personal protective equipment, (PPE) MSDS, fire and electrical safety, EPA and first aid inspections.
  • Maintains record keeping of all training, all DOT files and task training documents
  • Monitoring employees compliance with union drug testing requirements
  • Works with the National Safety team on negotiating OSHA citations and attend informal hearings
  • Addresses complaints and concerns in the area of construction safety and the drivers alert program
  • Assesses accident investigations and return to work assignments
  • Travels to work sites when needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Essential):

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent related experience
  • Knowledge of safety-related practices and procedures
  • Strong knowledge in the areas of Workers Compensation, OSHA, DOT, EPA
  • Computer skills and knowledge of office software packages including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to speak, read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and policy documents, as well as converse comfortably with associates
  • Strong knowledge of safety technical subjects, including OSHA regulations

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Desirable):

  • Knowledge of business and management principles
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet program, including strong analytical abilities
  • OSHA 500
  • Roofing or Construction experience

Occupational Health and Safety:

  • Compliance with workplace policies and procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control
  • Active participation in activities associated with the management of workplace health and safety
  • Identification and reporting of health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries and property damage at the workplace

Working Conditions:

Physical surroundings: Office environment with typical office machines and exposure to noise and temperature; Construction and Roofing Project sites with accompanying machinery, equipment, and materials

Physical Effort: Extensive sitting, standing, walking, climbing ladders. Repetitive keying, typing. Occasional lifting not to exceed 50 pounds

Travel: Occasional (up to 50%)

Hours: Exempt
